Abroad or going to? Gathering tens of new words a day? Books and dictionaries can help... to fall asleep.
Istrib gives you an on-line copy of your growing vocabulary. Now you let forget, but only for a while.
Choose a language and conquer it with other members of global Istrib community. Fun!
All the time, I am running into new words and idioms.
At work, while reading e-mails and company newsletters.
At home, while talking to friends, watching tv, reading magazines.
I can always log into my Istrib.org on-line account...
This is how my personal word book looks.
Here I write down the words, which I am going to learn later.
All that is on-line, in the web browser.
That is really cool: the word autocompletion.
I'm not the only one who uses Istrib to learn English. That's why I can take advantage of what others wrote down in their dictionaries.
Here I'm going to learn "to put up with" phrasal verb... Not sure what it means yet, I've just heard it on tv.
And that is even better: the autolookup.
Since other Istrib members translate foreign words to my native language, I can choose one of the suggested translations.
And now I know what "to put up with somebody" means. Of course I will forget it soon, that's why I am using Istrib to write it down in my private word book.
You may guess what that tiny speaker icon means. Yes, I can choose to play somebody reading "put up with".
I will hear it immediately and it will be also attached to my private word book entry. So it will speak each time I come back to learn this expression.
Look, what happens now.
Istrib searches for images, which may represent my new learned expression.
I have uploaded my own picture. It's my mother-in-law ;)
Once the word is recorded, Istrib takes care of reminding it. Forgetting and recalling is the only way to learn.
Istrib prevents losing words, which I want to learn. I can postpone the learning until I have time for it.
Then I start my private Istrib Lesson. Notice the black background: it helps to focus on the important stuff (and saves your eyes).
The lessons are simple. Questions and answers.
Istrib asks, you tell if you know or don't know how to translate the word. You have a few seconds to answer.
You are shown the associated picture and played the pronunciation audio.
See my mother-in-law? Maybe I do not remember that expression now... but her picture raises emotions, which will ultimately make me remember.
Yeah, "to put up with her...", how could I forget.
Now you just press "space" to say "I knew it" or any other key to say "No, I didn't".
The more valid answers, the less likely is a test repetition. Istrib works just like your memory. Even if you know the word now, you will forced to "train it", but much less frequently.
And at last... "Did I learn it?, No?, Let's add it!"
