What's up

2010-02-16

We'd like to apologise for the service being unavailable on 2010-02-15 due to a serious server error.

We've released the new look & feel of Silverlight part.

2010-01-15

You can now group your words into vocabulary subsets (called "dictionaries"). Three are provided by default: "All words", "Recently added" and "The difficult ones". Now you can run a lesson on the selected dictionary.

Silverligt 4 Beta includes voice and video recording from a web page. We're looking forward to official relase of Silverlight 4 in order to make resource uploading really interactive.

It was hard to understand what Istrib is about, since we didn't have a proper demo.

The demo is now a part of the main page.

2009-10-11

Work has started on Voice Recorder for Istrib. Soon you will be able to record the voice samples directly into Istrib database. No more MP3 uploads will be required.

2009-04-06

The Istrib community grows! We welcome the member number 1000!

All the best, Amida!

The new version of Istrib portal has been published. The core functionality (lessons, dictionaries, profile management) has been moved to a Silverlight applet. Silverlight is a growing Microsoft technology, which gives us better multimedia tools than HTML or Flash. And that is what we really need in e-learning.

Enjoy the vector graphics and more "real time" behavior! Ofcourse we do not charge for anything. Everything is free as always has been!

We'd like to thank you all for the precious feedback! Some of your suggestions are already in development: sharing with firends only, pronunciation/grammar field and automated selection of the most popular voice and images, when entering a new dictionary entry. All these functions will be published along with a revolutionary change, involving Microsoft Silverlight applets on our web site.

2009-02-05

Regarding the previous news... Yes, we think of building in a "familly" filter. We'd like to finish up the overall technology revolution first (coming soon...).

Check out the polish "bieda" (poverty). Have you ever seen a sexier way to learn a language?

2009-01-27

Why does the web site work faster? We moved a lot of processing to the background. You may notice that error messages are shown a bit too late... That's normal and it is caused by the fact that your requests are now processed behind the scenes.

2009-01-20

The Image database now consists of 20000 pictures! Thanks all for the recent batch uploads.

2009-01-06

We've got many questions regarding the new batch upload functionality. The popup shown when clicking "import" now includes all answers. Thanks to Robert for the batch sample, which you may now download from the popup.

2008-12-22

The long awaited batch "import" function has been published today. Enjoy! We recon that it will boost growing of our voice and image database.

Yesterday Joanna did a kind of Istrib discovery. Apparently the more crazy pictures you choose to visualize a learned item, the easier is to remember it! Moreover - it seems to be good to look at the pictures uploaded by other Istribians and guess what they had ment (that's often a challenging task). If these are crazy and "obscure", you win with your brain!

2008-12-03

There are now over 300 Istribians on this planet :)

2008-11-30

Happy birthday, Lukas!

2008-10-07

We hate to say that, but we had to remove some Spanish voice samples, due to violation of the terms and conditions by the person, who published that stuff. You cannot share stuff, you do not have legal rights to. That will include most of voice samples found in commercial dictionaries.

2008-09-13

Istrib is a "cool" and "sexy" tool to learn English, according to 6 students of Bournemouth language schools :). We'd like to thank you guys for enriching Itrib database with a lot of English-Polish, English-Spanish and English-French word translations.

2008-05-06

The authors are moving to London. Good bye Bournemouth!

I am aware that probably nobody is reading that, but I need to have some news in the news section, so here it is. I am publishing this website which I and my friends have been using to improve our English, while visiting UK in 2008. I am sharing it free of charge. I am going to develop it in order to convert a copy of it to another (commercial) web site (probably in a completely different domain). I am also going to use this website as part of my "portfolio" when looking for a job in Software Development (which is my every day occupancy).

The Istrib portal will remain free of charge and will be maintained as long as there are people wishing to use it and we do not run out of money for hosting :)
